Finds misspelled words in code, comments, and documentation.

Part of the [`spelling`](/reference/configurations/spelling/) configuration, at the `recommended` [level](/start/concepts/#levels). It runs at the `commit` [stage](/start/concepts/#stage), per file. It runs typos. `gspot check --fix` fixes what it can.

## Why

A typo in an identifier spreads to every caller; in prose it costs the reader a second look.

## What to do

Fix the spelling, or write the real name and its reason in the root allowed\_words setting.

## Example

A misspelled word reports a finding. Correct it, and for a file name, rename the file and update each reference to it.

## Turn it off

Turn it off for some files, or one of its lint rules, with a reason:

```shell
gspot ignore spelling/typos --paths "<glob>" --reason "<why>"
gspot ignore spelling/typos --rule <rule> --reason "<why>"
```
