# naming/paths

Checks every file stem and folder name against the case rules of its language and the banned words.

Part of the [`naming`](/reference/configurations/naming/) configuration, at the `all` [level](/start/concepts/#levels). It runs at the `commit` [stage](/start/concepts/#stage), per file. gspot runs this check itself.

## Why

A file such as `enhanced-utils.ts` collects code with no clear place. One case rule keeps imports predictable.

## What to do

Rename the file or folder, or add a path rule under \[\[naming.override]] with a reason.

## Example

`utils/format.js` reports `utils`. Move it into the folder of the feature it serves, such as `invoices/format.js`.

## Turn it off

Turn it off for some files, with a reason:

```shell
gspot ignore naming/paths --paths "<glob>" --reason "<why>"
```
