# naming/allowed-names

> Reports allowed names that no source file uses.

Reports allowed names that no source file uses.

Part of the [`naming`](/reference/configurations/naming/) configuration, at the `all` [level](/start/concepts/#levels). It runs at the `commit` [stage](/start/concepts/#stage), once for the repository. gspot runs this check itself.

## Why

An allowed name that nothing uses hides an obsolete exception.

## What to do

Remove the record that matches nothing, or fix its name or path.

## Example

An allowed name that no source file contains reports an unmatched record. Remove the name, or correct it to the exact identifier and scope.

## Turn it off

Turn it off for some files, with a reason:

```shell
gspot ignore naming/allowed-names --paths "<glob>" --reason "<why>"
```
