# gspot/unmatched-patterns

> Checks settings path patterns against tracked files.

Checks settings path patterns against tracked files.

Part of the [`gspot`](/reference/configurations/gspot/) configuration, at the `recommended` [level](/start/concepts/#levels). It runs at the `commit` [stage](/start/concepts/#stage), once for the repository. gspot runs this check itself.

## Why

An ignore or declaration that matches nothing misleads the next reader.

## What to do

Remove the record or correct its path.

## Example

An `[[ignore]]` record with `paths = ["nowhere/**"]` that matches no file reports `unmatched-pattern`. Remove the record, or correct its path and keep the reason.

## Turn it off

Turn it off for some files, with a reason:

```shell
gspot ignore gspot/unmatched-patterns --paths "<glob>" --reason "<why>"
```
